Lily Zalewski never imagined that her journey from corporate Learning & Development professional to entrepreneur would teach her the most valuable lesson about leadership: sometimes the bravest thing you can do is chart your own path.
As the Founder of Open Door Leaders LLC, Lily is on a mission to transform how we think about leadership development. After spending over a decade in corporate HR and Learning & Development roles, she recognized a critical gap in traditional leadership training—it often focused on processes and frameworks while overlooking the most important element: our shared humanity.
Lily's professional foundation is both deep and diverse. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and French from Augustana College before pursuing her MBA in Human Resources Management from Michigan State University, where she was honored as a 2022 MBA to Watch by Poets and Quants. Her expertise is further validated by her SHRM-CP certification, which she has maintained since 2018.

Her corporate career took her through strategic roles at industry leaders including Dell, Credit Acceptance, and MSU Federal Credit Union, where she spent 10 years mastering the art and science of leadership development. Whether designing innovative training programs, managing complex organizational change, or providing one-on-one leader consultations as an instructional designer, Lily consistently helped leaders bridge the gap between their aspirations and their impact.
But it was her own leadership journey that proved most transformative. After completing her MBA, the entrepreneurial spark was lit, though the leap felt daunting. When her time at Dell came to a close, Lily realized she was ready to find the balance and purpose that had been calling to her. In 2025, she took the brave step of founding Open Door Leaders, returning to her Learning & Development roots while embracing her passion for authentic leadership consulting.
Open Door Leaders reflects Lily's core philosophy: that great leadership starts with leading ourselves with curiosity, vulnerability, and transparency. Her approach goes beyond traditional corporate training to create genuine transformation through what she calls "the power of humanity and connection." She believes the best leaders aren't afraid to dig deep, get vulnerable, be messy, and find the strengths needed to uplift both themselves and others.
Through her signature program, The Leader Collective—a six-month cohort-based leadership development experience—Lily creates supportive networks where emerging leaders can develop their skills while building lasting connections. Each participant receives personalized coaching between monthly sessions, ensuring individual goals are met alongside collective growth.
Lily serves individuals, emerging leaders, and small to medium businesses throughout metro Detroit and across the US through remote delivery, with onsite options available. Her vision extends beyond individual transformation to creating scholarships for underserved groups and developing specialized tracks for emerging leaders, new leaders, leaders of leaders, and executives, with particular passion for women's empowerment initiatives.
As a speaker, Lily focuses on authentic and courageous leadership, emphasizing trust, transparency, and empathy as the cornerstones of effective leadership. Her message is clear: in a world that often rewards perfection, the most powerful thing a leader can do is step into their authentic self, embrace their humanity, and create space for others to do the same. Through her own journey of stepping into entrepreneurship, she embodies the courage she asks of others—proving that when we step into who we're truly meant to be, we unlock our greatest potential to lead and inspire.
